Songs of the Week: 2 April 2006

Survived April Fool's Day, a 4k walk, car repair, and the preparation of a making of a 'penis cake' for a bachelorette party. And I finished the rest of my Chinese food leftovers, unfortunately I then fell asleep and then missed the best comedy on television: professional wrestling. Absolutely stunning weather here yesterday.

My brain is frazzled this am, could be from the future reduction of yet another hour's sleep. (Would somebody tell me why we are doing this still? I mean in Australia it's so variable they decided to 'hold back' their daylight savings time change this year until the completion of their Commonwealth Games, so obviously we don't need it. And, what, half of the state of Indiana never changes still? Somebody give me a reason, as I think this 'tradition' has lost its meaning.)

That said, I have two songs going around in my head that I CANNOT FREE MYSELF FROM. It's sad, I was humming both the other day while at work...in the bathroom, which amplifies all sorts of humming a few decibels. Hereby let these two be the virginal inductees into my Songs of the Week category.

The first: "Steady As She Goes" by The Raconteurs (new project co-fronted by White Stripes' member Jack White). An infectious, stripped down, bouncy little hook that is like the love child between punk wannabes and mainstream fast food french fries.

  • View the band's website here. (Very retro early '80s 'Pong' type of site.)

  • (Love the cows. We can all thank Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics for that trailblazing detail.)
  • Lyrics from here (and printed below as well).

Lyrics from "Steady As She Goes":

The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes

From the album "Broken Boy Soldiers"

Find yourself a girl, and settle down
Live a simple life in a quiet town

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes

Your friends have shown a kink in the single life
You've had too much to think, now you need a wife

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Well here we go again, you've found yourself a friend, that knows you well
But no matter what you do, you'll always feel as though the truth has failed

So steady as she goes

When you have completed what you thought you had to do
And your blood's depleted to the point of stable glue

Then you'll get along
Then you'll get along

Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Well here we go again, you've found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do, it always feels as though the truth ends
So steady as she goes
Steady as she goes

Settle for a girl from the upper-town
Send it to the crowd that's gathered round
Settle for a girl from the upper-town
Send it to the crowd that's gathered round

So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
Steady as she goes (steady as she goes)
So steady as she goes (steady as she goes)

Steady as she goes
Are you steady now?
Steady as she goes
Are you steady now?
Steady as she goes
Are you steady now?
Steady as she goes
Are you steady now?
Steady as she goes

The second song is also a little catchy ditto, but more appealing to the 'mainstream' audience at large. KT Tunstall's "Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" has the potential to make it big...if she can get the right stations to play it, and if/when they do, they don't overdo it for her: I like her voice and really want to hear some more.
  • View her official website here. (This is the debut album for the Scottish songwriter...great outing.)

  • (Simple, no gimmicks, nothing flashy. Nothing irritating, either.)
  • Lyrics from here (and also below as well).
  • Special treat: the guitar chords and tablatures for this song from here.

Lyrics from "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree"

K T Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree

From the album "Eye To The Telescope"

two, three, four
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
well my heart knows me better than i know myself
so i'm gonna let it do all the talking.
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
i came across a place in the middle of nowhere
with a big black horse and a cherry tree.
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
i fell in fear, upon my back
i said don't look back, just keep on walking.
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
when the big black horse that looked this way,
said hey lady, will you marry me?
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
but i said no, no, no, no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me
no, no, no, no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me
(ooooo, woo-hoo)
and my heart had a problem, in the early hours,
so it stopped it dead for a beat or two.
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
but i cut some cord, and i shouldn't have done that,
and it won't forgive me after all these years
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
so i sent her to a place in the middle of nowhere
with a big black horse and a cherry tree.
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
now it won't come back, cause it's oh so happy
and now i've got a hole for the world to see
(woo-hoo, woo-hoo)
but it said no, no, no, no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me
no, no, no, no-no-no
said no, no, you're not the one for me
(ooooo, woo-hoo) (not the one for me, yeah)
(ooooo, woo-hoo)
said no, no, no, no, no, no, no
you're not the one for me
said no, no, no, no, no, no, no
you're not the one for me
big black horse and a cherry tree
i can't quite get there cause they've all forsaken me
big black horse and a cherry tree
i can't quite get there cause they've all forsaken me
